Micrium’s RTOS Brings Critical FDA 510K Certification to Renesas Technology’s R32C/100 Series Microcontrollers
Micrium’s uC/OS-II Ideal for Safety-Critical Applications such as Medical Market
WESTON, Fla. and SAN JOSE, Calif. — October 2, 2008 — Micrium, a leading provider of high-quality embedded software components, today announced that its uC/OS-II real time operating system (RTOS) has been ported to and fully supports Renesas Technology’s R32C/100 Series microcontrollers, a new addition to the M16C platform of products. The combination of Micrium and Renesas products offers an ideal platform to customers in a number of industries, including medical markets, and is based on Micrium’s existing FDA 510K certification and unique features that Renesas has built into the R32C Series.
“Micrium's support of the R32C/100 Series with its FDA 510K certified uC/OS-II is an exciting addition to Renesas' medical program,” said Ritesh Tyagi, director of product marketing for the system LSI business unit, Renesas Technology America, Inc. "The R32C/100 Series was designed with automotive quality in mind, which means that high reliability products are available to support the medical Industry. Micrium’s RTOS truly provides an advantage to our customers designing products in the medical segment by reducing their burden to achieve FDA certification.”
uC/OS-II is already used by a number of medical device and equipment manufacturers. Micrium's uC/OS-II has long been certified for such safety critical systems as:
- medical FDA 510(k) for Class III medical devices;
- SIL3/SIL4 IEC , and IEC 61058 standard for transportation and nuclear systems;
- avionics RTCA DO-178B and EUROCAE ED-12B.
In addition, uC/OS-II features are designed with the embedded system customer in mind. The software’s very small footprint enables it to be scaled to contain the features specifically required for the target application. For the R32C, uC/OS-II can be reduced to a little over 4K bytes of code space and 500 bytes of data space (excluding stacks). Execution time is constant and deterministic, independent of the number of tasks running simultaneously. Finally, uC/OS-II is very fast due to Micrium's code optimization. For example, the scheduler contains only four simple lines of C.
The Renesas R32C/100 Series microcontrollers are ideal for medical applications, as they offer large integrated memory options with 256k bytes to 1Mbyte on-chip flash and 63k bytes of SRAM. Its core functionality, with frequencies ranging from 50MHz to 64MHz, greatly increases calculation capabilities with an inline single precision floating point unit (FPU) and other features. The processor offers high reliability options and noise immunity features, which allow for long life products even in noisy environments. It offers devices with one to four CAN channels. Renesas’ M16C platform provides compatibility from the low-cost 8-bit R8C Family to 32-bit R32C/100. This allows designers to make a single investment in tools and development for primary and secondary products.
“Micrium has invested significant resources in supporting Renesas’ M16C Family so that our mutual customers achieve the maximum return on their investment, while committing the fewest possible resources to a project,” said Jean Labrosse, president and CEO of Micrium. “Both companies appreciate the value add of delivering proven solutions tailored for their specific requirements. uC/OS-II on the R32C/100 Series microcontrollers delivers a proven, certified and easy to integrate solution to medical device manufacturers.”
